Natalie Portman is a big Douche.....

So here is an excerpt from Natalie Portman's editorial on The Huffington Post:

"I say that Foer's ethical charge against animal eating is brave because not only is it unpopular, it has also been characterized as unmanly, inconsiderate, and juvenile. But he reminds us that being a man, and a human, takes more thought than just "This is tasty, and that's why I do it." He posits that consideration, as promoted by Michael Pollan in The Omnivore's Dilemma, which has more to do with being polite to your tablemates than sticking to your own ideals, would be absurd if applied to any other belief (e.g., I don't believe in rape, but if it's what it takes to please my dinner hosts, then so be it)."

Ok, let's not even get into the fact that I find it more than ridiculously insulting that in her analogy women are somehow being compared to a pig, cow or chicken. Look, I do not eat meat, but I think that the comparison between women's rights and animal rights is patronizing at best--moreover, showcases a continued belief that women are somehow a sub-class of human beings. I do think that there are detriments that occur for animals and human because of factory farming and other corporatist animal farming that should be eradicated; however, I DO NOT THINK NOW, nor have I ever, that animals can be considered "equal" in terms of cognitive capabilities to human beings. Moving on.....

The most important part of this??? Natalie Portman does agree with rape--well, at least not punishing rapists! She was one of the many fuckass celebrities to sign a petition calling for an end to the "witch-hunt" of rapist-douche-extraordinaire Roman Polanski.

The moral of this story? Don't eat meat...DO support rapists.
Stay class Natalie Portman.

Today....

I need to study for the GRE. I am taking it on October 3rd, which is now only 3 weeks away!!!

So far, I have fallen far, far behind on the studying. Why? Well, between teaching two classes, taking three classes, ISO activism/education/meetings, working out 3 days a week, and attempting some sort of personal life...there is not much time left.

After getting home from Scott's I decided to do some serious studying (obviously I had to have breakfast and coffee and check the emails and the daily news.) Well, then I impressed myself by studying for a total of 3 hours for the verbal. (I seriously need to work the analogies, but am also focusing on vocabulary building.) In the middle of this three hour study-fest I took the time to have a toasted cheese sandwich and organize/divide and email out contacts for Wednesday's mobilization in favor of single-payer. (The official title: "Healthcare NOT Warfare").

Then, after finishing the 3-hour study dedicated to the verbal section, I took a break. And by "break" I mean the following:

  1. Dinner (left-over channa masala, yum!)
  2. Putting away laundry and switching clothes from washer to dryer
  3. Grading the discussion board posts for my students this week
  4. Answering student questions
  5. Final editing and posting of the lectures and readings for my students this week, as well as outlining various questions for their consideration for their points for the week
  6. Doing dishes

Well, now that all of that is completed, I am about to begin studying for the quantitative portion. I am devoting 3 hours to that as well (considering I absolutely fucking bit the huge-o bullet on the quantitative last time, I really, really need to get it down). I have just made a cup of organic chai w/light vanilla Silk & honey.

After the conclusion of the study-fest I intend to watch a movie before bed. For not leaving the house, I feel as if it has been an excruciatingly busy day.

*thinking about "crushing" the GRE*

Today in Douchebaggery....

Ok, really yesterday.

Since purchasing my new car I have had the pleasure of 3 months FREE XM satellite radio. So, I was driving to eat some delicious Indian food around 8:30 w/my friend Chad after being in class since 10 a.m.

So, for giggles I flipped on the XM channel "America Right," the right-wing talk radio station. Some douche, whom I am assuming is this guy, given that he is the scheduled speaker at the time I was listening was talking about "remembering 9/11."

What did he have to say you might ask?

Well, first off when I flipped it on he was rambling on some rampage about "radical greens," although I am quite unsure as to why he was bitching about environmental activists, but anyway. Then he ranted about the "un-American radicals" (I am assuming this is anyone left of completely fucking crazy) for a minute or two (nothing really exciting or interesting just the normal "socialist blah, blah, blah freedom-hating b.s.). So then he says,

"and we should take a minute to thank our troops who are overseas fighting those barbarians so we don't have to fight them here"

Yes, he referred to ALL persons from Iraq and Afghanistan (and presumably all Arabs in Muslims in general) as barbarians.

WTF?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! Now look, this Marxist-feminist will be the first person to condemn radical religion as detrimental to the forward progress of society, ok so don't even start with me. However, how exactly is this blatant racist anti-Muslim garbage acceptable? I teach a class on multiculturalism, and I hear students occasionally make comments about Arabs/Muslims/Mexicans/Women/LGBTQ/Blacks that are sick and disgusting, and I wonder where the fuck they are getting their misinformation from. Well, now I know.

Listen, I know you all want to hide behind the good ol' "everyone has a right to their opinion" malarkey, and use it as an excuse why we are not openly condemning racist, disgusting pieces of fucking garbage like this. Well, I for one will NOT! I will not permit someone to refer to an entire group of human beings (who are ethnically, religiously, and culturally diverse I might add) as barbarians.

Hmm, lets talk a minute about being a barbarian, shall we?

So, is it "barbaric" to imprison Blacks, Latinos at rates that are egregiously higher than whites?

Is it "barbaric" to murder human beings by electric chair and lethal injection?

Is it "barbaric" to drop bombs on Iraqis and Afghanis?

Is it barbaric to continue to support dictators and right-wing regimes that are systematically oppressing and massacring their people around the world?

Is it "barbaric" to impose economic sanctions that lead to children starving to death around the world while the U.S. throws out 3x more food than it needs?

If so, I guess we can go ahead and call Bush, Cheney, Obama, Biden and the whole lot of U.S. law-makers "barbarians," since all of this goes on under their watchful eye and with their permission (and sometimes encouragement).

Oh, no, of course that isn't barbaric--the state holds a monopoly on the legitimate control of violence. When the state (and its politicians middle-right or crazy-right) murder, starve and torture it's completely acceptable.

No, this is not a rant where I condone the deaths of human beings, it's not. But I think that before we throw the term "barbarian" around and act as if 9/11 is some sort of anomaly in the world we should look at the fucking facts. There is a lot of rhetoric going around about "change," "socialism," "death panels," "pinkos and radicals," and blah, blah fucking blah. But no one seems to care/notice that there are millions of people living in sub humane conditions, being raped and tortured by the hands of their state or ours, being put in prison, being put to death with state permission and being treated like second-class citizens because of their ethnicity, language, religion, gender, sexuality, age, ability status and a myriad of other physical abilities or socially-constructed concepts.

So, before we go pointing the finger at an ENTIRE GROUP OF PEOPLE........let's think for a moment about how racist, discriminatory, backwards and BARBARIC those kinds of statements are.

Today I will be taking a moment to remember--

I will remember all of the women who have been raped, starved themselves to death or near-death because the media and culture tells them they are too "fat," or beaten and told it is their own damn fault for being so mouthy. I will remember of the children who are born with the misfortune of having poor or working class parents who will never have the "American dream" because of their class, all of the Blacks who have been lynched, imprisoned, harassed and murdered, all of the Latinos who are denied healthcare and dignity because of some imaginary border that serves the U.S. ruling class interests, all of the Muslims and Arabs that have died from U.S. wars abroad, and all of the Arabs and Muslims who have been harassed and assaulted in the U.S. after 9/11 because of racism and ignorance. I will remember Matthew Shepard today, Angie Zapata, and all of the other LGBTQ persons who have been harassed, beaten, tortured, murdered and told they were "weird," "disgusting," or "immoral." I will remember all of the Iranians who are in prison for fighting for their rights. I will remember all of the revolutionaries who died in Palestine, Vietnam, Cuba, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Venezuela and Chile. I will remember Huey. I remember Fred Hampton and how he was brutally murdered by the Chicago police. I will remember Leonard Peltier and the Native Americans who have been massacred and denigrated to sub-human status while our government bitches about "closing our borders" and "getting the foreigners out." I will remember those who have been wrongly murdered for a misguided cause ("freedom," or "democracy"). I will remember those who have fought and died for REAL freedom and democracy: for the power of the people.

*peace*

My Real Age Is???......

22.9 years, according to this site. Considering I a currently rocking the 24.6 years, I guess this is something I should be jumping up and down about, however, today is a "rest" day bitches!

So why was I partaking in this glorious little waste of time? Well, for my Population & Society Demography course there are various Internet exercises (of which this was seriously the least creepy considering the others were guessing the date of my death/age at death), of which taking this quiz was one of them.

Ok, Ok, so I am relatively pleased that I can now say that I am a non-smoker that does cardio/strength-training/flexibility exercises 3 times a week...and that I am satisfied with my sex life :)....but the suggestions were lame-o.

Seriously, "leadfoot"? I am pretty sure that my momma wrote this quiz to tell me to drive slower in my brand-spanking-new car. And I probably shouldn't talk on the cellphone, however, since I am still under my 3-month-free XM satellite radio subscription....the talking-whilst-driving is currently at a minimum.

So, some of my other suggestions:

1. worry less: no FUCKING SHIT. thanks.

2. floss more: alright, this one is just due to laziness; however, I have been known to yank a hair outta my head to get something out of my teeth in public. Classy, as always.

3. Get my cholesterol checked: I think this is a bit pre-emptive. Thanks.

4. "Upgrade my ride": *yes, this is a direct quote* since larger cars apparently offer more protection in crashes...but, less protection for the ozone and more $ for gas, so um, no.

5. Take more vitamins. Jesus, I know I wish people would stop with the damn vitamins. I really would, except I keep forgetting every time I go to the store.

Now, off to eat some snacks (I think I may have some fruit & yogurt since I ate an ENTIRE box of Annie's Cheddar cheese Bunnies yesterday). Good thing the damn quiz did not inquire as to my junkfood eating habits. I think I should eat some vegetables, since the quizzy-quiz said i am not eating enough; however, something sweet sounds far more satisfying.

Everyday Sexism...the Douchey-Student Addition

So, today I sit in class (a mixed undergraduate/graduate course with students whose majors are predominately the following: political science, sociology, WGST, Law and Social Thought). Ok, on the surface one would decry "liberal hippies," and they may be right.

This does not mean the classroom is free from sexism---on the contrary.

Here is the background:

I am sitting listening in on conversations that are going on around me and I overhear students complaining about their professors. (very common and I can only imagine what my students say about me "commie bitch" comes to mind). So this young (I am pretty terrible with ages, but I am guessing 21-22 year-old) male is commenting on the professor that he doesn't like (who is a female, and since she is in the Soc/Anthro dept. I know her and find her a genuinely likable, professional, and considerate woman--BUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUT finding out her name came after the craziness so do not assume bias here).

Well what does he say about this professor? "She is such a dumbass cunt."

Ok, first of all she has a PhD and this student is an undergraduate so my guess is she probably knows more about the topic at hand than he does (at least speaking on an academic level). So the dumbass is out. Hmmm, what about the "cunt"? And why does this matter to me?

Simple, it is this sort of gendered language that continuously insinuates that women are in a subordinate position to males ("dumbass") or completely unlikeable/bitchy/horrible, etc... ("cunt"). Despite the fact that this female professor is qualified to teach, knowledgeable about the subjects she teaches, and worthy of being treated with respect as an equal human being at the least--a student who does not have the same level of expertise/education feels it perfectly acceptable to question her intellect and authority.

One of the other male students in the conversation also was overheard as saying "I know, I once had this chick teacher...." Yes, chick teacher....OMFG!!!!!!! Women teachers? Can their lady brains handle it?

Yet another case of how language continuously places women (or can place women depending on the context) in a subordinate position to their male counterparts, and even male students.

The instructor is in a position of authority (as the head of the classroom) and has the qualifications to do his/her job and should be treated with respect. However, in this case, it is so easy to "brush off" a female by using words like "bitch," "cunt," "chick," etc....and imply that they are not in the position of authority.

Now, is this young male student feeling intimidated by a female having power over him in a public setting? Well, I cannot rule it out, but I doubt he is a "woman-hater" by definition.

Rather, I would place the blame squarely on our culture. We are raised in an environment where it is acceptable to refer to grown women as "girls" or "sweetie" or "baby" or "honey" (I realize some of these are terms of endearment between friends/lovers, but I mean in general) and if a woman exerts even a little bit of assertiveness or authority, it is that she is a "nutcracker," "castragor," "bitch" or "cunt." It is in this type of environment where males believe it is acceptable to refer to women in this manner, even those who pride themselves on their progressivity.

Gendered norms/language at its best/worst.

Meandering Down the Road to Heartburn City....

So, yes, lately I have been having heartburn issues.

Of course, I google "natural heartburn remedies" and the first good ol' about.com response is to cut out the following:

Citrus fruits
Chocolate
Peppermint
Spearmint
Tomatoes
Raw onions
Garlic
Black pepper
Vinegar
Fatty foods
Spicy foods
Coffee
Citrus juice
Carbonated beverages
Alcoholic beverages

Umm, ok, so I have virtually cut most of the alcohol out of my diet. Well, except for last night when I had a glass of Sauvignon Blanc and nearly exploded while falling asleep. Anyways--the list above pretty much sums up all of the things that I enjoy eating/drinking.

I cannot, cannot, cannot cannot and WILL NOT live without the following:

tomato
coffee
citrus juice/fruits
garlic
spicy foods
chocolate
vinegar (what the hell else am I gonna use for dressings/marinades, huh? Right, nothing.)

So, I guess I should apologize to my throat, chest, esophagus, stomach and ok..all of my freakin' digestive system because, well it will not happen!!!!

(One good thing to know, I have been a non-smoker for almost 9 months now, so at least that isn't adding to this not-so-blissful evening of burning flames.)

So, I bought lighter roast coffee, I know, still coffee--but not the super-dark and heavy shit I prefer. I also have bought soy chocolate ice cream, so tastes like chocolate- but isn't.

I hear that papaya enzymes work wonders for heartburn...perhaps I shall cough out the $ and purchase some!
